Over the holidays, we have been watching old movies.
A few critical questions arose:
Is Die Hard a Christmas Movie? Yes, yes it is
Is Die Hard #4 (Live Free or Die Hard) totally ridiculous? Absolutely (but still fun to watch)
Can movies sometimes be a great reminder about how to live your life? Yep, as in the case of Defending Your Life, the 1991 movie with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep
Streep’s character is playful, kind, generous and silly, yet profound. Brooks’ character is bumbling, likeable and lost, but also striving to be better. It is a winning combination. It’s slow, like many old movies, without the flash and instant gratification of any sex scenes, car chases, or superheroes. There is a bad guy, a plot twist, and an interesting ending. It’s worth the watch.
Even if you don’t watch it, it is worth considering how you are showing up in your life. And, if your life ended tomorrow and you went to the sorting place like they show in the movie, what would you be proud of? Defensive about? Bummed you didn’t pursue? Happy you did?
How is your life going these days?
The new year is an opportunity, not to beat yourself up and make punitive resolutions, but an opportunity to assess and make some course corrections. It’s worth acknowledging what went well and what didn’t go well, examining how you’re showing up with your patterns, habits and reactions. It is valuable to think about what you want in the future, and then to make some choices about how you’re going to make those desires come into reality.
Assess and act. Assess again. More action. Repeat. You get the picture.
Remember, your life belongs to you. Let’s make it a great one.
