If you are one of my clients, you probably have had the conversation with me about trying new things, and how confidence comes at the end of a learning curve. Often we find ourselves waiting until we feel motivated, confident or sure of ourselves before trying something new. Unfortunately, that isn’t how motivation, confidence or surety works. We have try new things, experiment with new behavior and start on the path. Then, as we get better and more experienced with whatever the new behavior is, confidence will begin to trickle in.
Today I am sharing a video, taken with one of my favorite coaches, Brenda Abdilla, PCC. She wanted to do a webinar on imposter syndrome and thought I could help out. While I have good ideas (and confidence) on the topic, I had never done a webinar before. Turns out, I was nervous and uncertain. It is unnatural to sit next to a friend but not look at her when I talk. It is weird to speak to an imaginary audience through a camera on a computer. In short, I didn’t feel a ton of confidence and it shows, especially in the beginning of the video where I look, well, nervous and uncertain. I’m posting this regardless, first because I stand by the content, and second because I can’t be asking others to try new things and not be willing to try them myself. Enjoy!
